Thessaloniki to Halkidiki by car is a drive that starts easily, but the distances inside the three peninsulas are greater than the map suggests. Kassandra is the closest, Sithonia takes more driving and the Mount Athos area is the furthest. This guide gives approximate distances and times from Thessaloniki, so you can choose a base and a car with a realistic plan.

The three peninsulas at a glance

Kassandra is the most organised and cosmopolitan, with beaches that offer services and villages such as Afytos. Sithonia is more natural, with pine forests, coves and villages such as Neos Marmaras and Sykia. The Mount Athos area has Ouranoupoli, Ammouliani and villages such as Ierissos and Nea Roda.

The choice is not only a matter of taste but of travel time. The further south or east you go, the more hours you spend in the car before you arrive. That matters when your time is short or when you travel with children.

Distances and times from Thessaloniki

The figures are approximate and measured from the centre of Thessaloniki. Nea Moudania, the gateway to the first two peninsulas, is about 70 km away. For most villages in Kassandra allow roughly 90 to 120 km. Nikiti in Sithonia is close to 100 km, while the southern points such as Sarti and Porto Koufo are over 150 km. Ouranoupoli is about 140 km away.

Without traffic, for most villages in Kassandra and Sithonia allow one and a half to two hours. For the southern tips and Ouranoupoli you need more. Check the route to your own destination on a map before you set off, because the distance varies a lot from village to village.

The main route and the fork at Nea Moudania

Most travellers leave Thessaloniki towards Nea Moudania and split from there. For Kassandra you pass through Nea Potidaia and the canal, for Sithonia you continue towards Gerakini and then towards Nikiti. Ouranoupoli sits at the tip of the third peninsula, to the east.

Enter your destination in the navigation the day before and look at the alternative route. In peak periods the main road can fill up, and knowing a second road saves you stress.

How many days you really need

A day trip is feasible only to the nearest parts of Kassandra, and only if you do not mind spending several hours on the road. For Sithonia and Ouranoupoli it is worth staying at least one night.

If you have three days, choose one peninsula and base yourself in one place instead of changing accommodation every night. That way the car serves your beach trips and not the moving of luggage.

Peak hours and summer traffic

In July and August the road towards Nea Moudania usually has more traffic on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. The same drive that takes you two hours can become three. If your plans allow it, leave early in the morning or late in the evening.

Refuel before you enter the peninsulas and keep some fuel in reserve, because between distant villages the distances are longer than they look. Carry water and a phone charger.

Parking and beach access

At popular beaches parking fills up early in summer, and the last road down to the sea is often narrow or unpaved. Arrive early in the morning, park carefully and do not leave items visible in the vehicle.

If you plan to take unpaved roads, read the store terms first. Damage on dirt roads is not always covered by the damage waiver. Choose a beach reachable by a paved road unless you have clear permission from the store.

Pick up in Thessaloniki or in Halkidiki

If you arrive by plane, picking up in Thessaloniki is usually the most logical option. You have a wider range of stores and categories and can leave straight for your destination.

If you are already staying somewhere in Halkidiki and need a car for a few days, check whether there are options where you are staying. Availability depends on the destination catalogue and your dates.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Thessaloniki to Kassandra?

Without traffic, roughly one and a half to two hours for most villages. The exact duration depends on the place and on when you leave.

How long is the drive from Thessaloniki to Sithonia?

For Nikiti and nearby villages about two hours or less. For the southern tips of the peninsula you need longer, especially in summer.

Is one day enough for Halkidiki?

Only for a nearby spot in Kassandra, with many hours on the road. For Sithonia or Ouranoupoli choose at least one overnight stay.

Do I need four-wheel drive for the beaches?

Not for the main roads. A few remote beaches have dirt roads, so read the store terms and prefer beaches reachable by paved road.

Where do I pick up if I have no flight?

You can pick up in Thessaloniki or, where a store is available, in the Halkidiki area itself. Check the destination catalogue for your dates.
