Motorcycle rental in Thessaloniki starts with a question that comes before the model and the price: which driving licence do you need. The right licence determines what you can rent, whether the store will accept you and whether the insurance cover applies if something happens. This guide explains the licence categories, the rule for car licence holders and what to check before you book.

The licence categories for two-wheelers

Category AM covers mopeds up to 50 cc. Category A1 covers motorcycles up to 125 cc and a maximum power of 11 kW, with a power-to-weight ratio of up to 0.1 kW/kg. Category A2 allows motorcycles up to 35 kW, and category A has no power limit.

Engine size alone is not enough to tell which licence you need, because power in kW matters too. Two motorcycles with similar engine sizes can fall into different categories. Ask the store which licence is required for the specific model.

50cc mopeds: what stores usually ask

For a 50cc scooter a car licence or category AM is usually accepted. The store sets the final requirement, though, and may ask for a minimum age or experience.

If you plan longer rides, a 50cc is not the best choice, because its top speed is limited. For city journeys it is simple and economical, as long as you feel confident in city traffic. Check the catalogue to see which models are available, because 50cc models are not always offered.

With a car licence: the rule for 125cc

Law 4784/2021 (article 23, which amended article 94 of the Highway Code) allowed car licence holders to ride two-wheelers up to 125 cc without new exams. As described in the relevant guides, the rider must have completed their 27th year, hold a category B licence for at least six years and attend five hours of lessons at a driving school.

When the conditions are met, code 121 is added to the licence. A card-type licence is required, because the code cannot be added to the old paper ones. Confirm the current wording and the procedure on gov.gr or at the transport department of your area before relying on it.

Motorcycles above 125cc

For motorcycles larger than 125 cc you need an A2 or A licence, depending on the power of the model. An A1 licence does not allow you to ride a 250 or 450 cc motorcycle.

On Ridom you will find motorcycles of different engine sizes and power. The licence category is not the same for all of them, so ask the store and check the power of the specific vehicle before you book.

If your licence is from another country

If you travel to Thessaloniki with a licence from another country, what applies depends on the issuing country and the category shown. Your national licence may allow different things from the Greek one, and an international permit does not create a right you do not have at home.

Bring your licence and, where needed, an international driving permit, and ask the store in advance whether it accepts your category for the vehicle you want. Do not wait for the pick-up to find out.

Store terms: age, experience, deposit

Beyond the law, each store sets its own terms: minimum age, years of experience, deposit and equipment requirements. For powerful motorcycles the terms are usually stricter.

Riding without the right licence can mean the insurance does not cover damage and liability, and then the cost falls on you. That is why the cheapest option is not always the best value.

How to check before you book

Look at the vehicle page and the store terms on Ridom. Note which licence is mentioned and ask the store if you have any doubt. Photograph your licence so you have the details available when they are needed.

If you do not meet the conditions for the motorcycle you want, choose a smaller vehicle you are allowed to ride or try another category, such as a car. It is better to find out before the holiday and not at the store counter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a motorcycle with a car licence?

For a 50cc scooter usually yes. Up to 125cc a special rule applies, with conditions and code 121 on the licence. For larger motorcycles you need an A2 or A licence.

What does code 121 on a licence mean?

It shows that a category B licence holder may ride two-wheelers up to 125 cc under the relevant rule. It is added to a card-type licence when the conditions are met.

Is an A1 licence enough for a 250 cc motorcycle?

No. An A1 licence covers motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW. For larger ones you need A2 or A, depending on power.

Do I need a licence for a 50cc scooter?

A car licence or AM is usually enough, but the store sets the final requirement and any minimum age.

What if my licence is from another country?

It depends on the issuing country and the category. Ask the store before you book and bring an international permit too, if needed.
